Pat Tillman Foundation

Pat Tillman was a man of amazing passion, heroic character and deliberate action – a man who knew himself and his mission, and who challenged those around him.  The Pat Tillman Foundation and W. P. Carey School of Business carry forward Pat’s legacy by inspiring and supporting exceptional students who strive to promote positive change in themselves and the world around them.

This distinctive educational experience brings students, faculty and community leaders together in discussions and exercises that generate a greater sense of self and purpose, enhance leadership skills and perspective, and actively promote positive change in their communities.

We are a community of exceptional students, alumni, faculty, mentors and friends who are informed and inspired by the values and actions of Pat Tillman and others to become more effective leaders through our actions, values and thoughts.  We are committed to deeply understanding ourselves, others and the tough challenges faced by our communities, and to demonstrating purpose, passion, confidence, knowledge, skills and ethics to mobilize people and resources to address the real challenges that impact and enhance the sustainable well being of our lives and our communities.

LTA Freshman Experience (2 credits)

In the first year, students will complete 2 (one credit hour) courses, one each semester, plus engage in community service work and a variety of personal development and team building activities.   Students will begin acculturation to the LTA community and the university and address issues of community responsibility and activism.  Advanced students will help guide the experiences in the first year under the direction of faculty.  Personal development and team building exercises, immersion in and debate about social issues, work with community activists and their organizations, and exploring the foundations of everyday leadership will be dominant themes.  Students will be exposed to a variety of speakers and community action organizations.

LTA Sophomore Experience (4 credits)

In the second year, students will compete 2 (two credit hour) courses, one each semester.  Faculty will guide the educational experiences in this year.  Community mentors will be assigned to students.  The focus of the year will be to build and demonstrate confidence, perspective, values, knowledge, and skills related to effective leadership in both formal and informal situations and to active social entrepreneurship.  Experiential learning methods will dominate.  As a community, students will learn from each other and from experts.  They will be challenged to demonstrate their values and skills by creating projects with a formal proposal for a community action program that can be implemented in future semesters.  Students will engage in critical discussions, casework, social service, exercises on personal development and social issues, and learn skills related to needs assessment and demonstration, benchmarking, planning and generating funds.

LTA Junior and Senior Experiences

The junior and senior years of the LTA experience will focus on entrepreneurial community project work and on students becoming program mentors and providing guidance and instruction for other students.  During these years, students will enact the powerful values and skills addressed  in the initial years.  Community experts will provide knowledge and contacts for students to fund, launch and sustain project work.  A workshop approach will be used.  The Tillman Scholars at ASU may be joined by students from other universities during these years, working together to create effective social action.
